“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”

Nelson Mandela

The above quote by Nelson Mandela helps us understand that the way we treat our children reveals our innermost state of mind. Children are the legacy we leave behind. So, if we want to create a better society, culture, world then let us look after our lineage.

Childhood is one of the most important parts of one’s life. It is when we form our vision and our beliefs that run throughout life. The surroundings of our children, at physical, mental, and emotional levels is key for their maturity and development. What is your child going through at this moment in time?

Fear seems to be in the ambience around us. This fear may be the source of our own discomfort so we may find it difficult to separate it from the fear our children feel. Children are sensitive towards the feelings of their caregivers, they pick up on what you are feeling. However, they themselves may experience their own innate fear which may the cause of their frustration, lashing out, anger. Their fear may be amplified by the fear they feel around them.

The first step here is to label what your child is feeling. A study based in the University of California showed through the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) that labeling emotions calms the brain. A simple tool called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) helps you to tap on meridian points to tune into your emotions and feelings, say them out aloud and defuse them.  The recent research in EFT indicates how it reduces your cortisol levels which is a precursor of stress. As well as labeling emotions it is important to balance them to restore positive harmony. One of the ways to do this is to take the corresponding Bach Flower Remedies to the emotions that is being experienced. The Bach Flower Remedies is a complete system of 38 different flower essences that correspond to each human emotion.  These are taking orally to help subdue the negative emotion you are feeling. They are completely natural, with no secondary effects, and are suitable for anyone. Taking the example of fear, if we are able to determine that the fear is of a known thing, Bach Flower Remedy Mimlus can be taken to restore courage. If children are unable to vocalise what they feel and are always seeking external validation, Bach Flower Remedy Cerato will help them have self-trust. If you want to find out about the Bach Flowers click here.

The key is to give your children the time and space for them to express themselves. We as caregivers have the opportunity to nourish our children back to harmony when we can actively listen. This will give us the prompt to work further with them techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique, Mindfulness and taking the relevant Bach Flower Remedies.
